LYCOMING COLLEGE - South Williamsport broke a 4-all tie in the bottom of the 9th to edge the Wellsboro Varsity Baseball team 5-4 Saturday afternoon.
"Tough ending to a very competitive baseball game today," said head coach Kyle Smith. "Both teams played fundamentally sound and pitchers threw strikes. It's always difficult to come up short in games like this, especially when we battled back to tie the game in the seventh inning, but sometimes that happens. "
The Hornets took the early lead in the top of the 1st after junior Marek Mascho singled with two outs then later scored on a double from sophomore Coen Tennis. South Williamsport tied the game up in the bottom half of the inning, then later added a run in the 3rd to lead, 2-1.
The Mounties added another run in the 5th, pushing the lead to 3-1 before Wellsboro answered back in the 6th.
The Hornets started the 6th with a base hit by Tennis and a walk by senior Ryder Bowen. Tennis would score on a sac fly by freshman Gabe Cuneo, cutting the lead down to 3-2.
South Williamsport added another run in the bottom half of the 6th to increase the lead back to two, at 4-2. However, Wellsboro answered back in the 7th.
With junior Cameron Owlett and senior Alec Magli on board Tennis singled to left, scoring both to knot the game up at 4-all.
The game remained tied until the bottom of the 9th when South's Torin Haug singled to right to score Tadd Lusk.
Tennis finished 3-for-4 at the plate to lead Wellsboro while senior Gabe Sprouse, Magli, Marek Mascho, senior Dustin Owlett, sophomore Max Mascho, and Cameron Owlett added the six of the Hornets' 9 hits on the day.
Sprouse started and went 6 & 2/3 innings, allowing 4 runs on 6 hits with 2 walks and a strikeout. Marek Mascho threw the final two innings, allowing one run on one hit with 5 walks.
Kamdyn Bubb picked up the win for South Williamsport, allowing just one hit and striking out 3 in 2 & 2/3 innings of work. Chance Quimby also threw 6 and 1/3 innings, allowing 4 runs on 8 hits with 2 walks and a strikeout. Cole Gerber was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Lusk finished 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs.
"Thank you to Lycoming College for permitting us to use their awesome facility today and to South Williamsport for putting the game together," added Smith. "We were glad to be able to play today regardless of the result."
The loss snaps the Hornets' three-game win streak, dropping them to 6-8. The team is back in action Tuesday against Wyalusing.
