Vermilya Takes 4th At Northeast Regionals, Qualifies For State Tournament

Lyle Vermilya (114) made it to states the hard way on Saturday, coming through the wrestlebacks at the Northeast Regional Championship to take fourth.

"It feels really good," Vermilya said about making it to states in a hard weight class. "I'm glad all the hard work that I put in is paying off, and I hope I can accomplish my goals for states."

He lost 8-1 to Warrior Run's Chase Wirnsberger in the bronze medal match.

Vermilya got a forfeit win in his elimination bout Saturday, then picked up a 14-5 major decision against Tunkhannock's Taylor Daniels.

"It was definitely challenging at some points," remarked Vermilya. "You have to wrestle either way, but to just put into perspective, that's how some of the brackets at states will be, and what you'll have to wrestle there. It was definitely a little bit of a strain, I had to focus more on what I was doing, and how I was executing things just to make sure that I didn't make mistakes here and there."

Vermilya went to states a year ago, and believes that experience will help this coming weekend.

"I'm definitely going to focus on just having fun with it being my senior year," he said. "I just have to go down and give everything I have, win or lose."

In the blood round match he beat Montgomery's Liam Seeley 6-2 to punch his ticket.

Tommy Preston (139) and Carson Rockwell (145) both came up one win shy.

Preston opened the day with a 6-0 win over Sullivan County’s Keegan Bagley, then pinned Hanover's Jeff Peck in 4:06 to get to the blood round.

In the consolation semifinals he lost a tough 5-3 decision to Mifflinburg's Lane Kenamond, but came back to beat Montoursville's Karter Stone 5-0 in the 5-6th place match.

Rockwell opened the day with a 4-1 win over Hughesville's Kile Hartman in the elimination round, then scored an 11-2 win over Lackawanna Trail's Garet Fowler in the consolation quarters.

In the blood round he lost by a 16-1 tech fall to Line Mountain’s Nolan Savage, then fell 9-3 to Honesdale’s Landen Estus in the 5-6th place match.
