The Wellsboro Volleyball team edged their rival North Penn-Liberty in the 3rd annual Chuck Tameris Memorial Trophy game Tuesday night to sweep the season series with the Lady Mounties.
The win is also the Lady Hornets' sixth in a row and is the third straight in the rivalry series.
"It was a great match. We were down most of the night, so it was exciting to see the girls work from behind each set and focus on one point at a time," head coach Darci Pollock said. "I absolutely love everything about this game. Our pink out game is so much more than just volleyball. Seeing two teams, their fans, and families come together to support the American Cancer Society and honor Chuck Tameris and his family has been amazing. I am grateful our team has been able to keep the trophy in Wellsboro. Not only is it exciting to win this rivalry, but it is so special for Teagan to win the trophy with her team in memory of her grandfather. Very proud of this team and their accomplishments so far this season."
Wellsboro took the first set 25-23, then Liberty rallied to take the second, 25-16. The Lady Hornets bounced back to win the third, 26-24, but then again dropped the following set, 25-20. With the match tied at 2-all, the Lady Hornets hung on to win the fifth and final set, 15-11, to claim the victory.
Junior Kendall Sweet led Wellsboro with 20 points (4 aces) and 15 kills while junior Peyton Keane made a game-high 20 kills and 34 digs. She also scored 9 points on 3 aces.
Senior Madison Cruttenden made 32 digs, senior Ellie Largey had 28 assists and 25 digs, junior Adelyn Frantz made 13 kills, junior Jillian Mickey scored 9 points (1 ace) and made 24 assists, and junior Teagan Novinger made 3 solo blocks and assisted on two others.
Sophomore Gena Fleming made 3 solo blocks and assisted one three.
Wellsboro started the evening with a 2-0 win in the JV match, winning 25-14 and 25-19.
The win improves the Lady Hornets to 11-2 (9-1 NTL Large School Division). The team is back in action Thursday night at Troy.
