Hornet baseball captures NTL West title

The Wellsboro Varsity baseball team captured the NTL West title with a 11-3 win over Troy.

"It feels pretty good," Senior Thomas Johnston said. "We've done it before but it's also good to win a league championship."

The Hornets were able to capitalize on five Troy errors and used sound hitting to bring home the title. Leading the way offensively for the Hornets was Junior Matt Reese. Reese went 3-4 with a double, 2 RBIs and a run scored.

"Matt has worked hard to get his swing back," said head coach Philip Prough. "He struggled earlier in the year and most recently I switched him defensively too. Through the turbulence, he continued to work hard and it's paying off for him. He's a resilient kid."

Senior Pat Parsons, Junior Ben Shaw, Johnston, Sophomore Dylan Prough, and Senior Nick Callahan also had hits. Callahan's was a 2-run home run in the seventh.

Sophomore Brandon Owlett scored twice in the game, while Prough scored three times to lead the team.

Junior Dan Saniga went the distance for his fourth win of the season. Saniga struck out five while limiting the Trojans to six hits, two walks, and three earned runs.

"Dan has been an ace for our team. I'm confident in his ability and his approach," said Prough. "He showed that when Troy had the bases loaded with one out. He came out of it with giving up one run and it was a turning point in the game."

With the win, the Hornets close the regular season with an 11-4 (9-1 NTL West) record. Please stay tuned to WellsboroAthletics.com as the District 4 playoff seedings are announced.
