The Wellsboro Lady Hornets kicked off NTL West play Thursday night with a 50-45 loss to rival North Penn.
The Hornets had North Penn down by four points at halftime, but could not contain the outside shooting of Mariah Berguson. Berguson hit four three-pointers for 17 points on the night. Senior Mackenzie Marple led the Lady Hornets with 21 points to keep the Hornets in the game.
9 of Marple's 21 points came in the third quarter, when Wellsboro struggled to make baskets.
"Shooting continued to be a huge problem, both from the field and free throw line," said head coach Mary Grab. "It was a very physical game and the girls played hard throughout."
Senior Kimberly Acorn had 11 points and Senior Hannah Zuchowski added eight in the loss.
In the JV game, the Hornets won to stay undefeated on the 2012-13 season.
With the loss, the Lady Hornets fall to 3-8 (0-1 NTL West). The team will be back in action on Saturday, January 5 as they host Liberty.
