Junior Kieron Smethers scored a game-high 18 points to help the Wellsboro boys basketball team defeat Troy, 54-49.
The Hornets were outscored 16-14 by the Trojans in the first quarter, but the Wellsboro defense held the Trojans to just four points in the second quarter to take a 26-20 lead into halftime. Troy rallied back in the third as they scored 19 points to the Hornets' 10, but Wellsboro turned up the defensive pressure again and outscored Troy 18-10 in the final frame for the win.
Senior Dylan Prough had 10 points, Senior Joey Doganiero and Sophomore Dawson Prough each had 9 points, and Junior Michael Pietropola had 8 points. Smethers also grabbed 11 rebounds 5 blocks to lead the team.
In the J.V game, the Hornets lost 32-29, their eighth consecutive loss of the season.
With the win, the Varsity team improves to 8-4 (2-1 NTL Division 1). The team will be back in action on Saturday, January 18 as they travel to Wyalusing.
