The Wellsboro Varsity Boys Soccer team's season came to an end as they were shut out 2-0 by Sayre on Saturday night, October 25.
Last season the roles were reversed as the Hornets knocked Sayre out 1-0 and earned the right to play for the District IV championship. This year, however, Sayre was on the winning side.
The Redskins struck only five minutes into the game as Jordan Rockwell hit Nate Williams for a break away behind the Wellsboro defense. Williams then put his shot past Senior Jake Mitchell to take the 1-0 lead. Sayre's second goal came halfway through the opening period.
The Redskins brought Matt Williams up from defense to take a corner kick and he put it in front of the Hornet net. Rockwell was waiting on the other end and he made a header to take the 2-0 lead.
Most of the Hornets' shot attempts were either blocked by defenders or off target. The team only recorded two shots on goal that Sayre keeper Marshall Higley needed to save.
Despite the loss head coach John Shaffer was pleased with how his team played offensively.
"I'm really happy with the style of soccer we played tonight," he said. "We want to be a passing team, we don't want to be a kick and chase team. They got in behind us early and then they nicked one on a corner kick, two minor breakdowns hurt us. We had the edge in possession, we passed the ball really well but it was just trying to get the final pass in the final third."
The loss ends the Hornets season at 14-6 (13-5 NTL).
