The Wellsboro Varsity Soccer teams had a strong showing in their final regular season games on Saturday, October 18.
The Wellsboro Varsity boys picked up a 3-1 league win over Liberty in Wellsboro. Junior Joe Allen got the scoring started for the Green and White as he converted an assist from Sophomore Josiah Hill to put the Hornets up 1-0 in the 16th. Liberty tied the game up at 1-1 in the 19th minute on a goal by Nathan Tice.
From that point on, the Wellsboro defense tightened and the offense came to life. In the 47th minute Hill scored on an assist from Junior Nick Webster to put Wellsboro up 2-1 and Senior Brieux Thibaut scored in the 64th minute to give the Hornets the 3-1 win. Senior Jake Mitchell recorded 5 saves in goal on the day.
"The boys played very well in tough conditions today," said head coach John Shaffer. "There were large chunks of the game with great movement and passing. As a coach I'm very proud of how the boys have responded to the difficult stretch they went through in the middle of the year. The team is starting to really hit their best form heading into districts."
In the JV game the Hornets lost 4-3 to end their season at 6-2-4. The win improves the Varsity team's record to 13-5 (13-5 NTL).
The Wellsboro Varsity girls shut out Mansfield 3-0 to end the regular season on a five-game winning streak. Junior Sarah Ingerick scored early in the 7th minute to give the Lady Hornets a 1-0 lead. Junior Lindsey Graver scored the first of her two goals in the 30th minute and then later scored on a penalty kick to give the Hornets the victory.
Freshman Kailee Clymer recorded two saves in goal for her fourth consecutive shut out.
The win improves the Lady Hornets' record to 11-5-1 (11-4-1 NTL).
To round out the day, the Middle School soccer team went 2-2-1 at the Williamson tournament. The Hornets beat Williamson 1-0, lost to Galeton 1-0, tied Sayre 0-0, lost 0-3 to Athens, and beat Liberty 4-0. Brett Rudy, Julia Smith, and Logan McElrath all scored on the day while Adam Cornell, Rudy, Holden Kennedy, and Cameron Tennis recorded assists.
"Everyone played team soccer and gave their best effort today," said head coach Ed Hamm. "I'm going to miss them next year but will enjoy watching them play at tthe next level. Both Varsity programs will benefit from have these young ladies and gentlemen next year."
