The Wellsboro Varsity Girls Basketball team picked up a 40-30 win opening round in the opening round of the Muncy Tournament over Northwest Area on Friday, December 5.

The Lady Hornets held a slim 8-5 lead over Northwest Area after the first quarter before dropping 16 points in the second quarter, led by Junior Sarah Ingerick's 14 points, to take a 24-10 halftime lead. Northwest's halftime adjustments forced numerous Wellsboro turnovers in the third quarter as they would outscore the Hornets 12-3 to trail 27-22 entering the fourth quarter. The Lady Hornets eventually settled down in the fourth as they outscored Northwest 13-8 to claim their first victory of the season.

"I give them (Northwest) great credit. The came out in the second half fired up and in our face and got us on our heels," said head coach John Davis. "We didn't respond very well to that and it was tough to get the girls to settle down but once they did we had better ball control and pulled away. It wasn't a pretty first game but I'll take it."

Ingerick finished with 19 points and went 5-8 from the foul line. She also added seven steals, two assists, and six rebounds. Junior Jada Jackson and Freshman Rachael Tuttle added six points each, Senior Jordan Butters pitched in five, and Junior Alexa Singer and Senior Peyton Wilson added two points each.

Singer had three assists and two steals on the night, Jackson grabbed a team-high eight rebounds and blocked a shot, Tuttle added two assists, a blocked shot, and five rebounds, and Wilson pitched in one assist and one steal.

The Lady Hornets will be back in action tonight, December 6 as they take on Hughesville at 8:00 p.m.
