The Wellsboro Lady Hornets needed only five innings to beat South Williamsport, 13-3, on Thursday, May 15.
South Williamsport struck first but the Lady Hornets quickly battled back in the bottom half of the first inning to tie the game up at 1-1. Wellsboro then turned on the offense as they scored one in the second, two in the third, three in the fourth, and six in the fifth to capture the win.
Sophomore Sarah Ingerick led the team at the plate as she went 3-for-4 with 3 RBI's and three runs scored. Junior Jordan Butters went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI's and a run scored, and Junior Paige Carr was 2-for-2 with 2 RBI's. Junior Baylea Lehman went 1-for-3 with an RBI, Senior Maggie Smith was 1-for-4 with a double, RBI, and a run, Sophomore Darci Warriner was 1-for-2, and Senior Brooke Kohler was 1-for-3 with 3 runs scored.
Kohler started on the mound and went the distance, giving up six hits, two walks, and struck out six for her fourth win of the year.
For Kohler, Smith, Kiersten Cooper, and Clarissa Hawk, Thursday's game was their last of their careers at Wellsboro.
"Its a big win for our Seniors tonight," said head coach Greg Carr. "We've competed with South Williamsport for the last four or five years and we've had some really good games. Last year they got us down there and for us to win this game going late into the season before playoffs is absolutely huge win."
Carr hopes the win will carry over as his team prepares for Districts next week.
"One of the things I was hoping we would do start hitting the ball and today we did a great job of that. Our defense and pitching was solid and has carried us all season so as a coach I'm pretty happy with our hitting and scoring some runs against a good, quality team that will be a high ranked team in Districts."
With the win, the Lady Hornets improve to 14-5 (5-5 NTL Division 1). The team will be back in action today, weather permitting, as they travel to Coudersport.
