Middle School girls go 2-1 at Towanda Tournament

By: Ed Weaver | PIAA District IV | February 23, 2014

The Wellsboro Middle School girls basketball team went 2-1 at the Towanda Tournament on Saturday.

The girls opened the day with a 29-17 loss to Athens, but then won 29-6 againt Troy and 29-20 at Blue Ridge. Lizzie Poirier led the team on the day with 27 total points, 15 steals, 4 assists, and 7 rebounds. Sydney Tremper and Brianne Keane added 13 and 10 points respectively. Rachael Tuttle added 17 points and 26 rebounds.

Additional contributors were Alyssa Yungwirth (4 points), Emma Poirier and Jillian Graver (2 points each) and Liz Johns (11 rebounds). Katelyn Huck, Dani Hunt, and Hayley Widows also contributed on the defensive end of the floor.

"The girls played hard all day," said head coach Darrell Morris. "We lost to a very big and athletic Athens team and just had too many turnovers against that caliber of a team. Unfortunately, they have the tournament set up where you can't come out of the losers bracket so when we lost to Athens, who ended up in the championship game of the 16 team tournament, we couldn't place despite a strong showing the rest of the day.

"We got all of our girls a lot of playing time against Troy and held them to 6 points, and then we had a very competitive and physical game against Blue Ridge, in which our team had to overcome some mistakes and a lot of pressure by Blue Ridge's defense. Our girls got a lot of experience in one day, and I expect this to propel us into the heart of our schedule in the coming weeks."

After the tournament, the girls are 3-1 on the year. The team will be back in action on Tuesday, February 25 as they host Cowanesque Valley.
