A 20-point fourth quarter by the Wellsboro Varsity Girls Basketball team helped them pick up a 55-35 win over North Penn-Liberty on Friday, January 15.
The Lady Hornets scored 16 points in the first quarter behind nine points from sophomore Lizzie Poirier while holding Liberty to just six points. The Lady Mounties made up some ground in the second quarter as they outscored Wellsboro 10-7 to trail 23-16 at halftime.
Wellsboro mainained their lead by outscoring Liberty 12-11 in the third and were up 35-27 entering the fourth quarter. Liberty eventually closed the gap and got within two points of Wellsboro before the Lady Hornets turned up the pressure and went on an 18-3 run. Sophomore Rachael Tuttle scored eight of her team-high 14 points in the quarter, and senior Sarah Ingerick scored all six of her points in the quarter for the Lady Hornets' fourth consecutive win.
Tuttle also had a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Lady Hornets on the night. Poirier had 13 points and senior Jada Jackson had a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds. Ingerick and junior Jessica Grab each scored six points and senior Alexa Singer rounded out the scoring with four points.
The JV team improved to 11-3 with a 33-7 win. Freshman Emma Poirier led the team with 14 points and sophomore Mikel Shabloski finished with eight points.
The win improves the Varsity team's record to 11-3 and qualifies the team for District IV playoffs for the first time in three seasons under head coach John Davis. The team is in action today as they host Danville at 11:00 a.m.
