The Coudersport Lady Falcons rallied from a 9-2 first quarter deficit to beat the Wellsboro Varsity Girls Basketball team 50-42 on Monday, December 12.
The Lady Hornets jumped out to an early 9-2 lead in the first quarter behind 7 points from junior Lizzie Poirier, but numerous turnovers allowed Coudersport to get back into the game.
"It was a tough one. Coming in we knew they were a good team and they had a lot of height on us," said head coach John Davis. "We knew it was going to be a dog fight and come down to boxing out, fighting for loose balls. They're a good team, they're rangy, athletic, and we had them. We had our chances and towards the end we started turning the ball over too many times and at the end that got us."
Coudy outscored Wellsboro 12-11 in the second quarter to trail 20-14 at the half. Wellsboro held onto their lead in the third as Poirier scored 6 out of Wellsboro's 11 points, but Coudersport scored 16 points, thanks to 6 points from Kiara Perkins and Haley Keck to cut Wellsboro's lead to 31-30.
Coudersport finished the comeback win with 20 points in the fourth to Wellsboro's 11. Wellsboro got into foul trouble in the fourth and Coudersport capitalized, hitting 5-of-6 free throws to pull out the win after both teams trading the lead multiple times.
Poirier was the game's leading scorer with 21 points to go along with 6 rebounds. Senior Janessa Davis finished with 7 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 steals, and junior Rachael Tuttle had 6 points and 15 rebounds. Also scoring for the Lady Hornets were seniors Autum Kitajima and Jessica Grab with 3 each, and 2 points from sophomore Emma Poirier.
Keck led Coudersport with 17 points and Ally Easton pitched in with 11.
Coudersport also won the JV game, defeating Wellsboro 35-15. Freshman Jaime Palmer was the Lady Hornets' leading scorer with 6 points.
Wellsboro falls to 1-2 (0-0 NTL Large School Division) on the year. The team will be back in action on Wednesday, December 14 at Canton.
