The Wellsboro Boys Soccer team's struggles to start the 2016 season continued with a 2-1 loss to Galeton on Thursday, September 8.
The first part of the opening period was a defensive struggle but the Hornets scored first with 11:09 remaining as junior Ryan Stough's kick found senior Jacob Singer for the Hornets' only goal of the game. Galeton tied the game up at 1-1 with 1:05 left in the first half as a shot by Isaiah Shuemaker deflected off Stough and into the goal.
Galeton added their second goal with 34:10 on a long shot by Cooper Sunderlin to take the lead. Wellsboro had their chances down the stretch. Senior Josiah Hill had a chance to tie on a penalty kick but was denied, and Galeton held on for the win.
Wellsboro outshot Galeton 12-9 and had a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks. Senior Casey Hoover made 5 saves in goal on the night.
"Tonight taught the boys a tough lesson. You must take your chances when you get them," said head coach John Shaffer. "The boys came out on fire and it should have been 3-nil inside of 10 minutes. After taking the lead we got a little unlucky with a crazy deflection that lead to their first goal. Even after they took the lead we had plenty of chances including a pk that was missed.
"I'm really happy with how the boys battles and played. Just disappointed with the finishing, but hopefully that will come with time this season."
The Hornets won the JV game, 1-0, to improve their record to 2-1 on the year. Freshman Robert Tardieu had the lone Hornet goal.
The loss drops the Hornets to 0-3 (0-2 NTL). The team will be back in action this afternoon as they travel to Sullivan County.
