The Wellsboro Varsity Boys Basketball team had a six-game win streak snapped in a 61-45 loss to Lewisburg on Thursday, December 29.
Despite leading 12-10 after the first quarter, the Hornets struggled the entire afternoon with getting shots to fall. Wellsboro outscored Lewisburg 13-11 in the second quarter, thanks to 7 Lewisburg turnovers to lead 25-21 at the half. However, Lewisburg flipped the script in the second half, forcing Wellsboro to make 9 turnovers.
The Green Dragons held the Hornets scoreless for the first half of the third quarter and finished with a 24-12 run to jump out to a 45-37 lead that Wellsboro could not recover from. Lewisburg again doubled up the Hornets in the fourth quarter, scoring 16 poiints to the Hornets' 8, to hand the Hornets their second loss of the season.
Senior Brandon Lamphier was the game's leading scorer with a season-high 19 points. Senior Jacob Singer (11) was the only other Hornet in double figures on the day. Junior Collin Pietropola scored 7, junior Dalton Prough and sophomore Brandyn Tuttle each added 3, and senior Alden Weiner pitched in with 2 points.
Singer and Lamphier had 7 and 6 rebounds, respectively and Lamphier had 3 assists. Singer and Weiner also added blocked shots on the day.
Lewisburg also won the JV game 34-32 to hand the Hornets their first loss of the year. Sophomore Andrew Brelo led the team with 11 and Tuttle added 9.
The Hornets are now 7-2 on the year and will be back in action on Tuesday, January 3, 2017 at Towanda before hosting rival North Penn-Mansfield in the third annual Margaret (Peg) Berguson Memorial Trophy game on January 5.
