The Wellsboro Varsity Boys Soccer team had their third clean sheet in their last 4 games with a 7-0 shutout against Sayre on Tuesday, September 20.

"I'm so happy with the boys tonight," said head coach John Shaffer. "Nothing makes a coaching staff prouder than to see everything from training implemented in the game. The passing combinations and the willingness to possess the ball was top class. I think the back line and goalie touched the ball as much as anyone else."

The win was also a milestone for Shaffer, who won his 80th game (80-44-4). Wellsboro has also won their last 5 games since starting the season 0-3.

Sophomore Brett Rudy opened up the scoring with a goal at 28:23 of the first half to make it 1-0. Wellsboro added 2 more goals in the first half on goals by senior Josiah Hill (junior Gabe Leach assist) at 19:53 and by senior Jacob Singer (junior Nic Ingerick assist) with 7:06 remaining.

The second half belonged to Hill and junior Tanner Runyan. Hill scored on an assist from junior Noah Fitch with 22:57 to make it 4-0 Hornets, then Runyan scored at 17:14 on an assist from Rudy to make it 5-0. Hill completed his hat trick, his third of the season and second straight hat trick, at 14:34 with an assist from senior Casey Hoover. Runyan added the game's final goal with 10 minutes remaining on another Leach assist.

Hoover recorded third straight shutout (13th career) with 9 saves in goal. Wellsboro outshot Sayre 22-14.

Hill now has 14 goals on the season and 67 career for his career. He is now 15 goals behind Alexis Getty's all-time record of 82.

In the JV game, Wellsboro won 5-0 behind 2 goals from junior Nolan Lohr and along with goals by freshman Conrad Becker, senior Alex Freeman, and sophomore Tanner Button. Sophmore Nate Redell made 4 saves in goal.
