The Athens Lady Wildcats snapped a five-game Wellsboro win steak by beating the visiting Lady Hornets 55-38 on Wednesday, January 11.
Coming into Wednesday's game both Athens and Wellsboro were tied at the top of the NTL Large School Division standings, but Athens remained undefeated (7-0) and dropped Wellsboro to a game back (6-1).
Athens scored 14 first-quarter points, led by Emily Lunger's 6, but the Lady Hornets scored 10 to hang with Athens. Wellsboro's best quarter of the game was the second, where they outscored the Lady Wildcats 8-5 to trail 19-18 at halftime. The second half, however, would be all Athens.
The Lady Wildcats outscored the Lady Hornets 36-20, including 20 points in the fourth quarter, to pull away for the win.
The duo of sisters Ariana (13) and Breana (12) Gambrell led Athens on the night as four Lady Wildcats scored in double figures. Lunger and Shanell Baglini each finished with 10 points each.
Junior Lizzie Poirier led the Lady Hornets with 10 points and 2 steals, junior Rachael Tuttle had 8 points and 10 rebounds, senior Janessa Davis had 7 points, and sophomore Emma Poirier scored 5. Freshman Cathryn Brought added 4 points and seniors Autum Kitajima and Jessica Grab added 2 points each.
Emma Poirier also added 4 assists.
Wellsboro (7-3) won the JV game 35-21 to push their win streak to six games. Freshman Jaime Palmer led Wellsboro with 14 and Brought scored 8.
The loss drops the Lady Hornets to 7-4 (6-1 NTL). The team will be back in action on Friday, January 13 for another tough game with Troy.
