Hornet boys soccer wins first District Championship in school history

By: Ed Weaver | PIAA District IV | November 3, 2017

The Wellsboro Boys Soccer team's historic season culminated in their first ever District IV Class A championship at Loyalsock Township High School on Thursday, November 2.

While the Hornets scored 135 goals on the season coming into Thursday's game, all while holding their opponents to just 10 total, only a single goal was needed as Wellsboro shutout two-time defending District IV champion Millville, 1-0.

With 32:12 remaining in the first half, senior Noah Fitch drove the ball deep in Quaker territory, then crossed it over to freshman Kaeden Mann for a sliding shot directly in front of the goal.

Wellsboro's defense prevented Millville from scoring the rest of the way for their 13th shutout of the season.

"What a crazy game, what a crazy atmosphere and man it feels good," said head coach John Shaffer. "I feel so happy for the boys, I honestly do. They deserve it. These seniors came in as 9th graders a year after we went to a district title, lost it, and went to states that year and honestly I think everyone expected it would be easy to get back. It's been a four year grind to get back to a district championship game and man they worked so hard."

Wellsboro (19-1-1) will now wait their draw in the PIAA State tournament.
