Hornets drop heartbreaker to Troy

By: Ed Weaver | PIAA District IV | April 13, 2017

The Wellsboro Varsity Baseball team suffered their second straight loss, as they fell 8-7 to Troy on Wednesday, April 12.

"You hate to drop a game when every game is so important, but games like this will make us a better team in the long run," said assistant coach Shane Mascho.

After two early runs by the Trojans in the second and third innings, the Hornets got a run back in the fourth as junior Caleb Tennis drove freshman Billy Lechler home to make the score 2-1. Then the Hornets' offense exploded in the fifth. After junior Parker Mann started the inning off with a walk, Wellsboro rattled off six runs. Mann, freshman Silas Wagaman, junior Johnny Rowland, junior Dalton Prough, sophomore Cam Tennis, and Lechler all scored to give the Hornets a 7-2 lead.

Troy cut in Wellsboro's lead in the bottom half of the inning with two more runs to make it 7-4, then the Trojans scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh for the win.

Davis started on the mound and pitched five innings, striking out six, walking three, and giving up four hits and four runs. Sophomore Taynton Repard threw one inning, giving up four hits, four runs, and striking out two. Prough also pitched two-thirds on an inning, walking one.

"Carson Davis battled all night on the mound, really proud of his outing," continued Mascho. "Dalton Prough made a few highlight grabs. Our execution was lacking at times, which is a characteristic of a young team."

Prough and Davis led the Hornets at the plate, each going 2-for-4 on the night and Lechler and Caleb Tennis were both 1-for-3. Mann drew two walks, and Caleb Tennis had two RBI's.

The loss drops the Hornets to 3-2 (3-2 NTL Large School Division) on the year. The team will be back in action on Saturday, April 15 against Jersey Shore.
