The Wellsboro Varsity Boys Soccer team won their fifth straight game by shutout against Northern Potter on Tuesday, September 19.
The Hornets scored 3 first half goals in Tuesday's win, starting with a penalty kick by senior Tanner Runyan with 14 minutes remaining. The Hornets kept the 1-0 lead until the last two minutes of the half when Runyan scored again off an assit by freshman Kaeden Mann. Senior Johnny Rowland added the Hornets' 3rd goal right before the half ended.
"I'm so happy with the patience the boys showed tonight," said head coach John Shaffer. "Northern Potter put all 11 players behind the ball and made it very difficult on us. They cleared countless balls off the line and blocked so many shots in the first half. The boys stuck to the gameplan and scored 2 goals right before halftime to swing momentum. A lot of credit goes to the boys scoring and getting assists but this team is so unselfish. I wish there were stats for all the great choices that are made by players in the build up to goals."
Wellsboro scored right off the bat to start the second half as senior Gabe Leach scored a solo goal to make it 4-0. Runyan then completed his second straight hat trick three minutes later on an assist from senior Noah Fitch. Fitch later scored off an assist from senior Nic Ingerick in the 52nd minute to make it 6-0, junior Brett Rudy scored in the 62nd minute off a Leach assist to push the lead to 7-0, then junior Holden Kennedy scored in the 69th minute.
Wellsboro's JV players saw Varsity action for the second straight game, adding the final two Hornet goals. Sophomore Conrad Becker scored in the 72nd minute off a Mann assist then freshman Joseph Grab made it 10-0 and finished the scoring in the 78th minute off an assist from freshman Will Poirier.
Wellsboro accumulated 48 shots on goal and 7 corner kicks. Junior Nate Redell made 3 saves in goal.
The win improves the Hornets' record to 7-0-1 (5-0-1 NTL). The team will be back in action on Friday, September 22 against North Penn-Liberty.
