Lady Hornets come up short against Troy in District IV Class AA quarterfinals

The Wellsboro Varsity Girls Soccer team's season came to an end in the District IV Class AA quarterfinals in a 2-1 loss to Troy on Thursday, October 26.

In their two previous meetings in the regular season Troy won by a combined 14-3 score.

The game was scoreless for the first 18 minutes until Troy's Riley McClellan crossed the ball to Nicole McClellan for the goal to put the Lady Trojans up 1-0. The score remained 1-0 Troy for the final 22 minutes of the first half and the first 10 minutes of the second half.

Nicole McClellan struck again for Troy, this time on a header off a Riley McClellan corner kick to increase Troy's lead to 2-0.

After much of the game was played on Wellsboro's half of the field, the Lady Hornets managed to move into Troy territory after being held to only four first half shots. Senior Kailee Clymer came up with the ball near the sideline and moved it over near her teammates. As scramble for control of the ball broke out, freshman Jena Boyce got her foot on it and tapped it to freshman Kerrah Clymer who sent a shot left-footed past Troy's Brianna Rathbun and into the goal, cutting the score to 2-1 with 11:35 remaining.

The Lady Hornets had a few chances as the clock wound down, but ran out of time and were unable to complete the comeback.

"My biggest hurdle was the girls didn't believe in themselves," said first-year head coach Scott Burrous. "They believed in themselves tonight. It was very exciting in the end. The one thing I love about them is they never quit, they never quit. We started out a little slow then in the second half we seemed to figure it out. We missed two we should've had, we just didn't get to the spot. I'm very proud of them, they played their hearts out."

Wellsboro edged Troy 10-9 in shots on the night but Troy had the 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Rathbun made 6 saves on the night while senior Sydney Tremper made 8 for Wellsboro.

The loss concludes the Lady Hornets' season with a final record of 11-7-1 and also end the careers of six Lady Hornets: Kailee Clymer, Sydney Tremper, Lizzie PoirierAlyssa YungwirthKaitlyne Kramer, and Linda Avery.

Kailee Clymer finished with 14 career goals, 13 this season, 9 assists, 536 saves, and 16 shutouts. Tremper, in her first year of soccer, made 160 saves and had 3 shutouts, Yungwirth scored 7 goals and made 4 assists, and Kramer and Avery each scored 1 career goal.

"I love these girls like my daughters," Burrous said of the senior class. "They are exceptional, their attitudes, their mannerisms, everything. When they get off the bus they thank the bus drivers, they shake the officials hands, its always 'coach this, coach that.' They're just an amazing bunch. I told them they're just a unique bunch."
