The Wellsboro Lady Hornets came up short in the quest for the NTL Showdown championship on Saturday, February 11.
Wellsboro fell behind 17-6 in the opening quarter. Nine days after knocking off the Wildcats in overtime, Athens came out firing as they jumped on the Lady Hornets early and never looked back. Wellsboro was able to makeup some ground in the second quarter, but Athens was just too strong.
"The girls played hard and Athens played very well," said head coach John Davis. "They were hot in the first quarter from outside and they didn't miss much. They dominated on the boards a little more this game than the last one and those two things made it hard for us."
Athens' Shanell Baglini was the game's leading scorer with 23 points, Emily Lunger had 15, and Breana Gambrell had 8.
Junior Rachael Tuttle had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, sophomore Emma Poirier had 11 points, senior Autum Kitajima finished with 8, seniors Janessa Davis and Jessica Grab had 3 each, and freshman Cathryn Brought rounded out the scoring with 2 points.
With their regular season in the books, the Lady Hornets will now await their opponent in District IV playoffs.
