The Wellsboro Varsity Girls Basketball team lost 48-41 to Sayre on Thursday, January 19.
Sayre jumped out to a 13-7 first quarter lead behind 8 points from Chloe Tracy, but the Lady Hornets battled back with a 16-point second quarter. Senior Janessa Davis scored all 5 of her points in the quarter, and freshman Cathryn Brought pitched in 4 points as the Lady Hornets cut into Sayre's lead and trailed by 7 at halftime, 30-23.
Wellsboro continued to fight back in the third and ended up outscoring Sayre 11-7 to pull within 3 points. Senior Autum Kitajima and junior Rachael Tuttle both scored 4 points in the quarter and junior Lizzie Poirier scored three. As the fourth quarter started, Sayre held onto a slim 37-34 lead.
The Lady Hornets got to within 2 points in the fourth quarter, but a big three-pointer from Molly Ball and made foul shots from Tracy and Kaeli Sutryk secured the win for the Lady Redskins.
Tracy (15) and Ball (14) led all scorers on the night. Lizzie Poirier led Wellsboro with 10 points, sophomore Emma Poirier had 9, and Tuttle finished with 8. Davis and Kitajima both finished with 5, and Brought rounded out the scoring with 4. Tuttle grabbed a team-high 17 rebounds and had 4 steals, Davis had 3 assists, Kitajima had 3 steals, and Lizzie Poirier had 3 steals and 5 rebounds.
Wellsboro won the JV game 48-27 to improve to 10-4. Freshman Jaime Palmer lead Wellsboro with 11 points and Brought pitched in 10.
The loss drops the Varsity team's record to 9-6 (8-2 NTL). The team will be back in action on Saturday, January 21 at Cowanesque Valley.
