The Wellsboro Varsity Softball team won their second consecutive game by shutting out Troy 9-0 on Wednesday, April 12.
Junior Alyssa Yungwirth hit into a fielders choice in her first at bat, then freshman Cathryn Brought singled to drive her home for the game's opening run. The Lady Hornets added two more runs in the second. With two outs sophomore Tiana Lecker connected on a pitch for a hit and Brought walked to put two on base for Yungwirth, who tripled to score both Lecker and Brought and make it 3-0 Wellsboro.
Junior Brianne Keane started a three-run third inning with a single, then junior Kailee Clymer singled and sophomore Kaytee Kemp drew a walk to load the bases for Lecker. Lecker tripled to bring all three home, pushing the Lady Hornets' lead to 6-0.
Wellsboro added three more runs in the seventh to close out the game. Yungwirth singled, junior Sydney Tremper and Brought walked to load the bases. A Keane single scored Yungwirth and Tremper, then Brought scored to make it 9-0.
Lecker went 2-for-3 with a triple and 3 RBI's, Yungwirth was 2-for-4 with a triple and 2 RBI's, Keane was 2-for-4 with 2 RBI's, and Clymer and Brought were both 1-for-3.
Yungwirth made her fourth start on the mound, and earned her third win of the year. Yungwirth pitched the first five innings, scattering five hits and striking out nine. Brought made her first appearance of the year on the mound with a walk and three strikeouts in two innings of work.
"It was another strong offensive game for our girls," said head coach Ron Brought. "They are attacking pitches they can hit hard and playing with confidence. The coaching staff is very pleased with how the team is progressing. The game is 'fun' for them and you can see by the way they're playing they are enjoying things. If we continue to give our pitchers a lead we'll be in good shape."
The win improves the Lady Hornets' record to 3-1 (3-1 NTL Large School Division). The team will be back in action on Monday, September 17 at home against Sayre.
