Midd-West field hockey tops Central Columbiaa, 4-0

By: Ed Weaver | PIAA District IV | September 28, 2017

Midd-West shutout Central Columbia 4-0 in PHAC field hockey on Wednesday, September 26.

The Mustangs held Central Columbia to just 4 shot attempts, while taking 22 of their own on the night in the 4-0 shutout. Beth Wagner started the scoring with 27:56 remaining in the first half and Jaylynn Blair added to the lead before the half expired. Blair then pushed the score to 3-0 and Brenna Brown scored with 4:49 remaining to make it 4-0.

Brown, Wagner, and Mariah Struck all picked up assists and Nicci Piccioni made 4 saves in goal. Central Columbia's Kristin Klingerman made 18 saves.

Mifflin County 3, East Juniata 2

Despite taking an early lead, EJ fell behind Mifflin County in the loss Wednesday. Kyli Dowling put the Tigers up early but Mifflin County tied it up before the half ended. Mifflin County took the lead in the second half on goals by Kortlin Yetter and Halle Kerstetter. EJ fought back and Emily Knepp ended up scoring a goal before the half ended, but it was too little too late.

"The girls played well tonight," said EJ head coach Harley Straub. "At the start of the game and the whole first half, they played aggressive and were able to score first. The beginning of the second half, we got caught on our heels and were not going to the ball as much, which allowed Mifflin County to take the lead, 3-1. With about 10-15 minutes left in the game, the girls picked up the momentum again and played like they were at the start of the game and were able to score with 1 second left to make it a one goal game. I was happy with how the girls played and look forward to them playing the rest of the games with that intensity. It was a whole team effort throughout the entire game. We will take that intensity into tomorrow's game with Greenwood."

Mifflin County outshot EJ 28-7 and had a 14-6 advantage in corners. EJ's Madison Beward made 25 saves.
