Milton, Warrior Run tie in field hockey

By: Ed Weaver | PIAA District IV | September 15, 2017

Milton and Warrior Run played to a tie in PHAC field hockey action on Thursday, September 14.

Milton 2, Warrior Run 2

The Defenders scored the game's opening goal with 20:38 remaining in the first half by Rylie Mong. Milton's Cora Sandrick tied it up at 1-1 with 12:39 remaining in the first. The first part of the second half was scoreless until Milton's Caitlyn Solomon scored on an assist from Alicia McElwee with 17:54 left to put the Black Panthers on top. The lead didn't last long as Warrior Run's Abby Lapp tied it back up at 2-2 with 15 minutes left. The game went into overtime, but neither team scored ending the game in a draw.

Milton's Larissa Shearer made 11 saves.

"Great game played by both teams today," said Milton head coach Jennifer Mabus. "I was proud of their hard work and determination. I thought it was going to be tough with one of our team captains (Alyssa Byers) out with a mild concussion, but the girls stepped up and played hard. It showed on the field and reflected in the score. So proud of them!"

Newport 5, East Juniata 0

Newport scored four first half goals in their shutout victory over EJ Thursday. EJ was limited to 1 shot on goal and Newport controlled the corners, 19-4. Madi Beward made 17 saves.

"The girls played a great second half," said EJ coach Harley Straub. "They were able to hold Newport to only one goal in the second half. In the first half, nerves took control of the game and the girls ended up playing a lot of defense. Also, we had a few scoring chance but were not able to find the back of the net. We learned a lot of things we need to work on for our future games. We will come back Saturday morning and take on Lewisburg in a non-conference game."

Lewisburg 5, Danville 0

The Green Dragons picked up their 5th win of the season by shutting out Danville Thursday. Lindsay Starr, Cassie West, Izzy Zaleski, Lexi Barrick, and Katie Koch all had goals for Lewisburg while Zaleski, Annie Murphy, and Starr all recorded assists. Lewisburg had a 19-1 advantage in penalty corners, and took 24 shots (to Danville's 1) on goal. Kerstin Koons made 1 save for Lewisburg and Kiera Fahey made 19 for Danville.
