The Wellsboro Middle School Basketball teams dropped a pair of games at home to Wyalusing on Wednesday, February 22.
In the boys game, the Hornets lost 34-27. Wellsboro only produced 7 first half points due to 14 unforced turnovers, and trailed 17-7. Wellsboro regrouped at the half and outscored Wyalusing 20-17 but were unable to dig themselves out of their poor first half deficit.
"We decided to start playing in the second half and you can't do that against good teams like Wyalusing," said head coach Jason Greenfield.
Joseph Grab had 15 to lead Wellsboro, Isaac Keane scored 8, and Will Poirier and Zach Singer each added 2 points each. Grab added 6 rebounds, Poirier made 4 steals, and Nevin DeCosta had 3 assists.
Wellsboro won the B game 20-15. Danny Timmons led the Hornets with 10 points, Drew Manning had 6, and Dylan Abernathy had 4.
In the girls game, the Lady Hornets lost 26-18 to Wyalusing. Wellsboro fell behind 11-4 after the first quarter but battled back to cut the score to 11-7 at halftime.
“We got down early to a very good and big Wyalusing team, said head coach Darrell Morris. "We had 29 turnovers and lots of missed layups. You can’t get away with that against a team of their caliber."
Jena Boyce had 8 points, 2 rebounds, and 3 assists; Bailey Monks (10 rebounds) and Sarah Mosher (4 rebounds) had 4 points each; Chelsie English (10 rebounds) and Kiyah Boyce had 1 point each.
"I was very happy with how our girls battled and fought right down to the last buzzer," continued Morris. "We will learn from this game and be better prepared going into the last two weeks of our season."
In the B game, Wellsboro came back from 7 points down to tie 13-13. Emma Coolidge had 6 points, Abbye Cavanaugh had 3 points, and Kathryn Burnett and Emma Brandenburg had 2 points each.
The Wellsboro boys will be in action at the Williamsport Tournament this afternoon at 4:30 p.m., and both teams will resume their regular season schedules on Monday, February 27 at home against Athens.
