In a game with a chance to be co-NTL Large School Division champions, the Wellsboro Varsity Softball team came up short in a 3-1 loss to Wyalusing on Thursday, May 17.
"The girls played a great game tonight and we were strong in all aspects of the game," said head coach Ron Brought. "Our defense made several stops on nice plays to end Wyalusing threats. We hit the ball right from the start but came up just a little short."
The Lady Hornets were looking to avenge an earlier season 18-0 loss to Wyalusing back on April 19, and started out with an early lead. Senior Sydney Tremper singled to get on base then later scored as freshman Chelsie English singled to put Wellsboro up 1-0. The score remained that way as sophomore Cathryn Brought and the Wellsboro defense kept Wyalusing's offense in check.
Brought issued only one walk on the afternoon and struck out 4. Throughout the first 5 innings she scattered 3 hits. Once the bottom of the sixth came around the Lady Rams' Kristie Epler and Sarah Bird both had base hits and Hailey Jayne drew a walk. All three would score to take a 3-1 lead.
The Lady Hornets had a shot to at the win in the top of the seventh. Freshman Jena Boyce and senior Alyssa Yungwirth, in her first live-game action of the season after sustaining a knee inury in the fall, both reach base. Down to their final out, Tremper stepped up to bat in what would have been the go-ahead run. Tremper sent a shot to deep center that drove Wyalusing's center fielder all the way back to the fence where she made a running catch to end the game.
"The girls showed the type of heart and drive tonight that we need to be successful in our D4 AAA playoff run," conclude Brought.
Boyce was 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the Lady Horents while sophomore Ryann Adams, Tremper, English, junior Heidi Zuchowski, and senior Kailee Clymer added hits.
The loss drops the Lady Hornets' regular season record to 11-8 (11-4 NTL Large School Division). The team will wait for their seeding in the upcoming District IV Class AAA playoffs starting next week.
