Middle School Hornets split with NEB

The Wellsboro Middle School Basketball teams split a pair of games with Northeast Bradford at home on Wednesday, February 28.

The Hornets won the boys' game 43-12 to improve to 6-8. Wellsboro shutout NEB 9-0 in the first quarter then ourscored the visiting Panthers 19-5 in the second to take a commanding 28-5 lead at halftime. Wellsboro then outscored NEB 15-7 in the second half to cruise to victory.

Conner Adams led all scorers with 12 points, Isaac Keane had 10, Peyton McClure finished with 9, Liam Manning had 6, Darryn Callahan scored 4, and Ryan Sweet rounded out with 2.

Callahan had 4 steals and 2 rebounds, Adams had 3 assists, Keane had 10 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals, and 3 blocks, and Sweet grabbed 5 rebounds.

In the B game the Hornets won 37-20. After jumping out to a 14-2 lead after the first, everyone saw action over the last 18 minutes. Sweet led the Hornets with 14 points and McClure finished with 12.

In the girls game, the Lady Hornets lost a 17-16 heartbreaker to fall to 8-4. Wellsboro led 6-2 after the first, then were tied 8-8 at halftime and 12-12 after the third. Wellsboro was up 2 with 30 seconds left until NEB drained a 3 and were unable to recover.

"We played a very good NEB team tough," said head coach Darrell Morris. "Our girls battled, but a high number of turnovers caught up with us again."

Emma Brandenburg, Abbye Cavanaugh, and Emma Coolidge had 4 points each. Emma Pietropola and Lindsey Marmara had 2 points each and Rylie Boyce added 3 rebounds and 4 steals.

In the B game NEB beat Wellsboro 34-8. Rylie Boyce had 6 points and Ella Posada had 2 points.

The girls play next on Saturday, March 3 in the Towanda Tournament and open up against Central Mountain at 11:30 a.m. Both teams are back in action on Monday, March 5 against rivals North Penn-Mansfield.
