For the Loyalsock Lancers

BLOOMSBURG—It was a quick eight laps as Loyalsock’s Isabell Sagar nearly chased down the entire group of male runners during the 3,200 Wednesday at Central Columbia.

Sagar cruised to wins in both the 1,600 and 3,200, posting times of 5:23.11 and 10:32.09. The wins helped secure a victory for the Lancers, who defeated Central Columbia 105-45 to pick up the dual meet win. The boys fell to Central Columbia 112-38.

It’s been that kind of season for Sagar, who has already qualified for the District 4 Championships in both of her events. In fact, Sagar qualified during the first home meet of the season. Since that race, she has spent time working on the little things that will help her make another deep postseason run.

“I’m just kind of getting into things,” Sagar said. “I want to do some bigger races. It’s been a lot of run. It’s just a lot of fun to run at the meets now. It’s been a cool experience.”

The few experiences Sagar has had on the track this year have garnered the attention of nearly every distance runner in the state.

Sagar is posting ridiculous times in both runs. She has spent the offseason training by herself and the results of that discipline have been on full display throughout the early portions of the season.

“I ran 10:50 last season, but that was toward the end of the season,” Sagar said. “It was the first home meet that I first broke 10:40. It was so great. It felt really good.”

As Sagar fine-tuned things for the postseason, her teammates continued to push, winning the majority of events to pickup the victory over the Bluejays.

Hailey Zurich was pushed throughout her 100 race as teammate Sophia Gardner nearly edged her on the final leg of the short race. Zurich posted a 12.81 and Gardner was right behind with a 12.86. Gardner went on to win the 200 with a time of 27.96.

“It’s amazing having one of the underclassmen come in an push me,” Zurich said. “Last year we had a really good bond and for her to push me in training every time is really awesome.”

Zurich also won the pole vault with a high jump of 11-00. Gardner won the long jump after she posted a 17-01.5.

Megan Kendall got Loyalsock off to a good start as she picked up the first individual win for the team in the 100 hurdles. She finished with a time of 15.83. She would then go on to win the 300 hurdles with a 49.25.

“I felt really rested coming into the meet,” Kendall said. “I got out quickly.”
