The Wellsboro Varsity Girls Basketball team picked up their second consecutive win as they beat Cowanesque Valley 47-29 on Thursday, January 10.
After a close first quarter that saw the Lady Hornets lead 10-7 Wellsboro opened up some distance in the second quarter with a 16-9 run to lead 26-16 at halftime. From there the Lady Hornets outscored CV 21-13 in the second half to pick up the win.
Senior Emma Poirier led all scorers with 21 points. Junior Cathryn Brought poured in 15, sophomore Bailey Monks had 5, sophomore Jena Boyce scored 4, and junior Liza Manning chipped in with 2.
Boyce pulled down a team-high 6 rebounds, Brought collected 5, and Manning grabbed 4 (all offensive). Poirier added 5 steals and an assist to her point total while Brought came up with 4 steals and an assist. Manning (2), Monks, and senior Heidi Zuchowski all blocked shots on the evening.
Wellsboro started out the night with a win, pulling out a 25-23 nail-biter, to improve to 3-5. Freshman Abbye Cavanaugh led the way with 8 points and freshman Emma Coolidge added 7. Five other Lady Hornets pitched in all with 2 points each.
The win improves the Lady Hornets' record to 5-6 (5-1 NTL Large School Division). The girls are back on the court on Saturday, January 12 as they host Athens with a 1:00 p.m. JV start.
