An 8-run 7th inning led the Wellsboro Varsity Softball team to an 11-4 win over Cowanesque Valley on Wednesday, May 1.
The Lady Hornets trailed 4-3 heading into the top half of the final inning then exploded for an 8-run rally for the win. After a lead-off ground out by sophomore Jena Boyce, junior Cathryn Brought singled and senior Heidi Zuchowski doubled and both would score. Freshman Emma Coolidge reached on an error, sophomore Jessa Lohr singled, senior Tiana Lecker doubled, junior Ryann Adams singled, and sophomore Kerrah Clymer doubled.
Boyce then capped the inning with a home run to seal the Lady Hornets' victory.
Prior to the 7th Cowanesque scored once in the bottom of the 1st and 3 times in the 3rd to go up 4-0. Wellsboro then started chipping away with single runs in the 4th, 5th, and 6th innings.
Zuchowski led the Lady Hornets at the plate with a 3-for-4 outing, Lohr finished 2-for-3, Brought and senior Hailey Neal were both 2-for-4, and Adams was 2-for-5. Lecker, Clymer, Boyce, Coolidge, and freshman Abbye Cavanaugh rounded out the Lady Hornets' 16 hits.
Clymer started on the mound for Wellsboro, going 3 innings and allowing 4 runs (2 earned) on 4 hits. Brought came on in relief and gave up 1 hit in the final 4 innings and struck out 4.
The win improves the Lady Hornets' record to 8-5 (7-3 NTL Large School Division). The team is back in action at home on Friday, May 3 against Troy.
