The Wellsboro Varsity Boys Basketball team closed out the regular season on the road in Towanda with a 53-44 win on Tuesday, February 4.
After dropping three games in a row the Hornets won their last two games while qualifying for the District IV playoffs.
"The boys grinded out a win and finished with a winning record. Now it's time to regroup and focus on playoffs. I'm proud of these boys," head coach Steve Adams said.
Towanda outscored Wellsboro 10-9 in the 1st quarter, but after that the Hornets regrouped, rallied, and outscored the Black Knights 13-7 in the 2nd to take a 22-17 lead at halftime. Towanda went on a 16-12 run in the 3rd to cut Wellsboro's lead down to a point, 34-33, to start the 4th. Wellsboro then outscored the Black Knights 19-11 over the final 8 minutes to secure the win.
Junior Joseph Grab led Wellsboro with 19 points and sophomore Darryn Callahan scored a career-high 18. Freshman Conner Adams scored 5 points, seniors Ty Morral and Andrew Larson and sophomore Isaac Keane all scored 3 points each, and sophomore Liam Manning had 2 points. Grab added 5 steals and 3 assists, Manning grabbed 5 rebounds, Morral made 3 assists, and senior Daniel Mitchell had 4 rebounds.
The Hornets finish the regular season at 12-10 (9-7 NTL Large School Division) and will be back in action once the field for the District IV playoffs are set.
