Senior Madeline Gage and sophomore Chris Greenawalt each took home 1st place in their respective races as the Wellsboro XC teams opened their season against Canton and Sayre on Tuesday, September 13.
"Our boys battled it out until the very end when Chris overtook Max to win," said head coach Eric Kosek. "Our girl Maddie won her race with zero competition around and our JV took one two and three with ease."
In the boys race Greenawalt passed fellow teammate Max Macias right at the end to score the win. Both ran times of 20:45, with Greenawalt edging Macias in a tenth of a second. Freshman Henry Whitney (24:25) finished 9th, freshman Robbie Bowers (25:27) was in 10th, and junior Tristan Lane (44:55) was 13th.
Canton went 2-0 on the afternoon, beating Sayre 20-38 and Wellsboro 25-31. The Hornets beat Sayre 19-36 to go 1-1.
For the girls Gage crossed the finish line 1st in 22:43. Senior Julia DeCamp (28:27) was 6th and sophomore Karah Blackwell (30:31) was 10th.
Canton beat Sayre 20-34 and Wellsboro 23-30. Sayre edged the Lady Hornets, 26-27.
In the junior high race Wellsboro swept the top three spots. Michael Knefly (8:48) took 1st, Lauren Kosek (9:08) was 2nd and Isla Twoey (9:41) came home third.
The Hornets are back in action in non-league action at South Williamsport on Thursday.
