The Wellsboro Varsity Softball team won their 2nd straight game, picking up a 10-3 win over Towanda during Senior Night on Thursday, May 5.
"This group is a wonderful group of girls who I've had the pleasure of coaching and watching grow over the years," head coach Hannah Smith said. "They were my first group of eight graders when I began volunteering with the middle school program and I cannot be more proud of the young ladies they are growing up to be. All three of them have very bright futures and we can't wait to see what they do next!"
The Lady Hornets found themselves in a 3-0 hole as the Lady Knights scored once in the 1st and added 2 more runs in the 3rd. Wellsboro then went on to score 10 straight runs to claim the victory. A 2-run 3rd brought the game to within a run then Wellsboro took the lead with a 5-run 4th and never looked back.
Wellsboro had 11 hits on the night including 5 extra base hits. Junior Jordyn Abernathy was 2-for-3 at the plate with freshmen Alexandra Urena and Paige Logsdon going 2-for-3 and 2-for-4, respectively. Seniors Abbye Cavanaugh and Emma Coolidge and juniors Molly Ingerick and Madaline Bordas added the remaining hits. Urena also drove in 4 runs on the afternoon. Junior Rylie Boyce started in the circle and earned the win, allowing 3 runs (2 earned) on 3 hits with a walk and 4 strikeouts in 4 innings. Urena came on for the final 3 innings for the save.
The win improves Wellsboro's record to 6-10 (4-8 NTL Large School Division). The team is back in action on Monday, May 9 at Wyalusing.
