Senior Conner Adams became Wellsboro's new all-time stolen base leader as Wellsboro knocked off Coudersport 14-4 before the rain settled in on Saturday, April 22.
"Great team win," head coach Steve Adams said. "Lucas Cuneo makes a great diving catch which led to a triple play! I'm proud of Conners accomplishment of becoming the all-time Wellsboro leader in stolen bases. Speed is a big part of his game and setting the record with losing a season due to COVID makes it really special."
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the third where the Hornet offense woke up. Led off by sophomore Alec Magli reaching on an error, Adams and junior Caden Smith drew back-to-back walks while senior Cameron Brought and freshman Marek Mascho were hit by pitches. All four scored, putting Wellsboro up 5-0.
Coudersport scored 4 times in the top of the next inning to cut it to a one-run game, however Wellsboro's offense kept firing over the next two innings.
In the bottom half of the fourth Adams got things started with a double, Smith singled and Brought drew a walk to load the bases. Senior Blake Hamblin then smacked a bases-clearing double in the next at bat to make it 8-4.
The Falcons threatened in the top of the 5th with putting two men aboard with free passes, however in their third at bat, sophomore Lucas Cuneo made a sliding catch and immediately fired the ball to Adams for the force out at second. Adams then turned and fired over to Brought to complete a triple play to end the inning. In the bottom half, Magli led off with a double, Adams drew another walk, Smith picked up his second base hit of the day, and Brought drew a walk. Hamblin reached base on a fielders choice and Mascho reached on error. All 5 scored, putting the Hornets up 14-4 to end the game.
Smith and sophomore Ryder Bowen both went 2-for-3 at the plate. Adams was 1-for-1, Hamblin was 1-for-3 and drove in 5 runs, Cuneo was 1-for-1 with a double, and sophomore Gabe Sprouse was 1-for-2 with an RBI.
Brought earned the win on the mound, allowing 4 runs (3 earned) on 3 hits with 6 walks and 6 strikeouts in 4 innings of work. Hamblin came on for the final inning, walking two.
The win improves the Hornets' to 6-5 (5-3 NTL Large School Division). The team is back in action on Tuesday at home against Sayre.
