Senior Cameron Brought recorded a double-double of 19 points and 20 rebounds as the Wellsboro Varsity Boys Basketball team edged Jersey Shore 48-47 on Monday, January 9.
Brought's rebounds place him 3rd all-time in Wellsboro boys basketball records books.
In what can be described as "poetic justice," following Friday's one-point loss at the foul line to rival North Penn-Mansfield, Brought hit the game-tying shot, was fouled, then converted the three-point play to seal the win for the Hornets, snapping a four-game losing streak.
Again, unlike Friday, Wellsboro controlled the first quarter, outscoring the Bulldogs 13-4 but Jersey Shore closed the gap with a 12-point 2nd quarter. The Hornets scored 14 in the quarter, taking a 27-16 lead into halftime. Shore rallied in the 3rd quarter to make it a one-point lead. The Bulldogs put up 14 points in the quarter, while holding the Hornets to just 4, to trail 31-30. Both teams scored 17 points each in the final eight minutes.
While Brought led all scorers on the evening, two other Hornets were also in double digits. Seniors Peyton McClure and Conner Adams scored 12 and 11 points, respectively and juniors Caden Smith and Ian Hoose added 3 points each. Adams made 8 assists on the evening and also grabbed 4 boards, Smith added 5 rebounds and 5 assists, McClure grabbed 3 rebounds and also made 3 steals, Hoose grabbed 4 rebounds, and junior Watson Feil added 3 rebounds.
Spencer Brion scored 13 to lead Jersey Shore.
In the JV game Jersey Shore won 63-43, dropping the Hornets to 2-5. Freshman Jonathan Carl led the Hornets with 14 points while Owen Stevens added 11 and Aaron Kirk finished with 10.
The win improves the Hornets to 5-4 (3-1 NTL Large School Division). The team is back in action at home on Wednesday against Troy.
