Despite trailing Sayre early on, the Wellsboro Varsity Baseball team rallied in the middle innings to defeat the Redskins 11-5 on Tuesday, April 25.
"We weren’t sharp to start but settled in after the third inning and played pretty good ball," head coach Steve Adams said. "Each game the players are learning what it takes to play and to be successful at the Varsity level."
The Hornets found themselves in a 3-0 hole after the first two innings but managed to get a pair of runs back in the bottom of the third. Senior Conner Adams and junior Caden Smith both scored on a single by senior Blake Hamblin, cutting the lead to 3-2. Wellsboro then took the lead in the 4th as they added 3 more runs. Adams, Smith and senior Cameron Brought all scored in the inning after reaching base, giving Wellsboro a 5-3 lead.
The Redskins tied the game up with a pair of runs in the top of the 5th, but Wellsboro answered with two more runs to regain the lead at 7-5. Sophomore Lucas Cuneo and freshman Cameron Owlett (pinch running for sophomore Alec Magli) scored in the inning.
Wellsboro held Sayre scoreless in the top of the 6th then added 4 insurance runs, courtesy of Hamblin, Brought, Cuneo, and sophomore Ryder Bowen, to close out the victory.
Hamblin was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with 3 RBIs to lead the Hornets while Brought and Bowen were both 2-for-4. Cuneo was 1-for-3 with an RBI, Magli, Adams, and freshman Marek Mascho were all 1-for-4, and Smith was 1-for-5. Adams, Brought, and Cuneo all doubled on the night.
Mascho got the win on the mound, allowing 2 runs on 2 hits with 1 walk and 4 strikeouts in three and a third innings of work. Hamblin pitched one and two thirds of an inning, allowing 3 runs on 3 hits with 3 walks and strikeouts. Brought also pitched two innings for the save, holding Sayre to 1 hit with 1 walk and 4 strikeouts.
The win improves the Hornets to 7-5 overall and 6-3 in the NTL Large School Division. The team is back in action at Cowanesque Valley on Friday.
