The Wellsboro Lady Hornets suffered a 47-40 loss to Wyalusing during Senior Night on Friday, February 10.
"We got into foul trouble early and played from behind all night," head coach Darrell Morris said. "The girls played hard but we struggled to make shots and gave Wyausing too many free throws. It is disappointing to not be able to get a win on senior night, but our girls battled until the final buzzer and that is how our seniors have played throughout their careers."
Wellsboro trailed 8-5 after the first quarter but played a close second quarter, but were outscored by a point in the second, 14-13, to trail 22-18 at the half. The Lady Hornets scored 11 points in each of the second half quarters, but again were edged by the Lady Rams as Layla Botts would go on to score a game-high 20 points. Chloe Bennett added 15.
Sophomore Paige Logsdon led Wellsboro with 12 points and 9 rebounds. Junior Maddy Mascho added 10 points, senior Ella Posada and sophomore Chloe Brandenburg finished with 6 points each, junior Emily Richardson pitched in 4 points, and senior Hailie Kerr rounded out the scoring with 2 points. Posada added 2 assists and a steal, Mascho had 4 rebounds and 2 assists, Brandenburg grabbed 8 boards and made 4 assists, Kerr grabbed 8 rebounds, and senior Molly Ingerick grabbed 2 rebounds.
"Ella, our captain, has really led the defense all year. She has great anticipation on defense and is great at taking charges. She was a coach on the floor defensively.
"Molly did a great job of being a role player this year and giving us valuable minutes to sub in for other girls. She was a leader on the bench and a great teammate. She made what can be a difficult role look easy. It says a lot about her character.
"Hailie is a tremendous athlete who plays 100% the whole game. She did a good job on the boards for us this year and always hustles the whole game. All three were easy to coach. I had all three of them on our middle school team, then JVs, and now varsity.
"When you spend 5, 6, 7 seasons together, you really are like an extended family, and those relationships are something I will always cherish," concluded Morris. "I am sad to see them go, but excited for them to start their next chapter where they will all continue to be successful."
Wellsboro ended the evening with a 21-13 win in the JV game, their second win of the season. Brandenburg led the way with 11 points and freshman Lily Wagner, junior Hannah Gilmour, freshman Rowan Butters, Richardson, and Mascho all added 2 points apiece.
The loss drops the Lady Hornets to 7-13 (7-8 NTL Large School Division) on the year. The team returns to action on Monday, February 13 against Athens before winding out the season at Williamsport on Thursday.
