The Wellsboro Girls Basketball team opened the 2023-24 season with a 35-20 win over rival North Penn-Mansfield on Tuesday, December 5.
The Lady Hornets controlled the opening quarter, outscoring the Lady Tigers 11-2. Wellsboro added 7 more points in the 2nd quarter and held Mansfield to just 4 points, to an 18-6 lead at the half.
"Our girls got it done defensively tonight," head coach Darrell Morris said. "We missed some easy looks here and there, but we played through it and found a way to win. We have some work to do, but I am very pleased with the way we played as a team."
Both teams scored 9 points in the 3rd but Wellsboro outscored Mansfield 8-5 in the final frame to secure the win.
Senior Maddy Mascho led all scorers with 11 points, junior Chloe Brandenburg finished with 8 points, junior Paige Logsdon added 7, senior Emily Morris had 5 points, and senior Emily Richardson rounded out the scoring with 4 points.
Kameron Lightener led North Penn-Mansfield with 9 points.
North Penn-Mansfield won the JV game 20-9. Wellsboro was led by sophomore Lily Wagner with 4 points.
Wellsboro (1-0, 1-0 NTL Large School Division) is back in action on Friday at the Muncy Rotary Tournament.
