At their annual Summer Workshop on Thursday, August 1, the PIAA District IV Committee announced the creation of a new scholarship.
The Jack Zeigler and Mike Schwarz Scholarship, a one-time $5,000 scholarship, will be awarded to one (1) male and one (1) female student-athlete annually at the discretion of the District IV Committee.
Zeigler was an avid supporter of all sports, having served on the PIAA District IV committee for 20 years, with 10 years as the chairman. He also served on the state PIAA board of directors for 10 years. He was the basketball chairman for PIAA and was the overseer of the District IV basketball tournaments. He began his career as a math teacher at Kishacoquillas High School in 1964. He came to the Warrior Run School District as an assistant administrator at the high school in 1974 on an internship through Penn State. After receiving his principal's certificate, he was appointed the high school principal in 1975, where he remained until 1987, when he transferred to the middle school.
Schwarz was a lifelong educator and mentor who truly enjoyed working with every student helping them reach their full potential. He had a positive influence on the lives of many who regularly contacted him to express their gratitude. Michael was a Math teacher, Vice Principal and Principal at Cowanesque Valley High School. He finished his career as Superintendent of Galeton School District. He was a basketball referee for 40+ years and also a member of the Tioga County Hall of Fame as a coach/contributor.
