After a slow start the Wellsboro Varsity Boys Basketball team pulled away for a 58-31 win over Wyalusing on Friday, January 12.
The Hornets had a slim 10-9 win after the opening quarter, but went on a 13-5 run in the 2nd to put some distance between themselves and the visiting Rams, leading 23-14 at halftime. Wellsboro held Wyalusing to 10 points to begin the second half while posting 15 on the scoreboard, however they saved their best quarter for the last quarter, scoring 20 points, while giving up only 7, to push their final lead to a 27-point differential.
9 Hornets scored on the evening, led by senior Hayes Campbell with a game-high 18 points. It was the 5th straight double-digit scoring game for Campbell, and the 9th one of the season. Junior Mitchel Lechler and senior Ian Hoose finished with 8 points each, sophomore Aaron Kirk added 7, senior Caden Smith and junior Lucas Cuneo had 5 points apiece, senior Isaac Macias added 3 points, and sophomores Jonathan Carl and Luke Rothermel contributed two points.
Campbell also grabbed 11 rebounds to record his 1st double-double of the season. Smith dished out 8 assists, Hoose grabbed 6 boards, and Lechler, Rothermel, Smith and Kirk all pulled down 3 boards each.
Nick Vanderpool had 11 points to lead the Rams.
Wellsboro also won the JV game, 46-10, behind 14 points from freshman Colin Fletcher and 11 from Cuneo. They improve to 8-2 on the year.
The win in the Varsity game improves the Hornets to 7-3 overall and 5-2 in the NTL Large School Division. The team hosts Canton on Tuesday for Senior Night.
