The Wellsboro Varsity Girls Basketball team overcame a slow opening quarter to defeat Towanda 31-17 on the road on Tuesday, January 30.
Both teams were knotted a 4-all after the first quarter, however the Lady Hornets bested the Lady Knights thanks to a 13-5 run in the second quarter. The run gave Wellsboro a 17-9 lead at halftime.
"The first quarter, Towanda got us to play at their pace. We settled down after that and played more controlled and took over the game," commented head coach Darrell Morris. "We didn't shoot particularly well, but solid defense and working the ball around on offense kept us in command the last three quarters. Our girls are really coming together at the right time."
Once the intermission was over the Lady Hornets held Towanda to just 8 total points in ensuing 16 minutes.
Junior Chloe Brandenburg led all scorers with 14 points while junior Paige Logsdon added 7, senior Maddy Mascho scored 6, and seniors Emily Morris and Emily Richardson added two points apiece. Logsdon pulled down 13 rebounds while Morris added 11, Brandenburg made 4 assists and grabbed 5 boards, Richardson had 3 rebounds, and Mascho made 3 assists and a steal.
Kennedy Heyer led Towanda with 6 points.
In the JV game the Lady Hornets held Towanda to just a single point to win 15-1. Sophomore Lily Wagner led all scorers with 6 points. Sophomore Jordan Rumsey added 3 points and freshman Elizabeth Ferero, senior Hannah Gilmour, and freshman Bri Stocum all added 2 points.
