Warriors Top Hornets 5-3 To Remain Undefeated In NTL Play

Canton gave Wellsboro their 3rd straight loss, beating the Hornets 5-3 on Tuesday, May 7 to keep their perfect league record in tact.

"Canton is a well coached fundamentally sound team, they created some opportunities and took advantage of them. It's a lesson we can learn from," said head coach Kyle Smith.

Wellsboro took the game's first lead in the bottom of the 2nd after both teams were held scoreless in the first. Freshman Coen Tennis led off the inning by reaching on an error and junior Ryder Bowen singled. Both scored to put the Hornets up 2-0. Canton's bats woke up in the top of the 3rd, where they scored 4 runs to take the lead. Wellsboro got one run back in the bottom half of the inning as sophomore Marek Mascho doubled, then scored on a base hit from junior Alec Magli.

The Warriors' final run came in the top of the 5th.

Wellsboro had 5 hits in the game, led by Mascho's 2-for-2 performance at the plate. He also stole a base and drew two walks. Magli finished 1-for-2, Bowen was 1-for-3, and sophomore Cameron Owlett was 1-for-3.

"We are continuing to struggle at the plate. The only thing to do is keep working on our approach," added Smith. "Baseball season is a grind and the weather early in the season hasn't helped our ability to get some practices in. We won't make excuses, we will just go back to work tomorrow. That's really all we can do. The boys are trying, we just have to get over some mental hurdles at the plate and things will turn around."

Mascho threw a complete game, allowing 5 runs (2 earned) on 6 hits with 3 strikeouts.

The loss drops the Hornets to 5-11 overall and 4-8 in the NTL Large School Division. The team is back on the field Friday afternoon at Williamson.
