Senior Ryder Bowen hit a three-run home run in the top of the 7th in a 6-3 loss to Mount Carmel in the first round of the District IV Class 3A playoffs Saturday afternoon.
The Hornet trailed the Red Tornadoes 6-0 heading in to the final inning when Bowen connected on a pitch and sent it to deep center field. Junior Marek Mascho and sophomore Coen Tennis also scored in addition to Bowen.
"Tough way for our season to end today, but just like the second half of our season, the team rallied and battled throughout and we were able to put some real game pressure on them late," head coach Kyle Smith said. "Mount Carmel has some high quality pitchers and they were the difference today. It is always difficult when a season ends but we are pleased with the character of this team and a lot of that credit goes to our seniors. We are proud of what they were able to accomplish in their final season."
Mount Carmel scored in the 1st to take an early lead, then a 5-run sixth inning put them up 6-0 before Bowen's homer.
The Hornets had five hits on the afternoon, one each by Bowen, Marek and Max Mascho, freshman Gabe Cuneo and freshman Griffin Morral.
Max Mascho started on the mound, and took the loss, allowing 6 runs (5 earned) on 7 hits with 2 walks and 2 strikeouts in 5 innings of work. Senior Gabe Sprouse threw the final inning, allowing 2 hits.
The Hornets conclude their season with an 11-10 overall record and 9-5 in the NTL Large School Division.
