The Wellsboro Varsity Baseball team suffered their second straight 10-run loss on Thursday, this time to rival North Penn-Mansfield.

"The season hasn't started off the way we had hoped, but we have a long way to go and we will keep working every day," said head coach Kyle Smith. "We have struggled offensively thus far which has only increased the pressure on our pitchers and defense."

Wellsboro took the early lead in the top of the 1st as junior Marek Mascho scored on a passed ball during senior Gabe Sprouse's at bat. After a scoreless bottom half the Hornets added another run in the top of the 2nd. Senior Ryder Bowen led off the inning with a walk, then moved into scoring position, and later to 3rd, on passed balls. Bowen scored on a RBI ground out by senior Alec Magli.

Then the wheels fell off for the Hornets.

North Penn-Mansfield rallied in the bottom of the 2nd with 3 runs en route to 12 consecutive runs. The Tigers scored twice in the 3rd, 3 in the 4th, and 4 in the 5th to end the game early.

Wellsboro was held to just one hit on the afternoon, by Bowen, in 16 at bats. Sophomore Max Mascho threw three innings on the mound, allowing 5 runs (2 earned) on 2 hits with 3 walks and a strikeout. Freshman Gabe Cuneo threw an inning, surrendering 4 runs (2 earned) on 2 hits with a walk and a strikeout. Senior Dustin Owlett also threw 2/3's of an inning, giving up 3 runs (all earned) on 2 hits with 3 walks.

Alex Davis threw a one-hit game in 4 innings to pick up the win for the Tigers. He also walked two and struck out 4. Cooper Shaw was 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI and 2 runs scored.

The loss drops the Hornets to 0-2 (0-2 NTL Large School Division). The team is back in action Saturday afternoon as they host Hughesville in non-league action.
