Lady Hornets' Offense Explodes In 14-4 Win Over Sullivan County

Wellsboro produced a double-digit offensive performance to 10-run Sullivan County, 14-4 in 6 innings, to pick up their 2nd win of the season Thursday.

"This was the best game offensive and defensively that we played this year," said head coach Greg Carr. "We had no strikeouts at bat and a real team effort."

Sullivan County came out of the gate strong, plating 3 runs in the first inning to take an early lead, but the Lady Hornets starting chipping away in their first at bat. Freshman Adelyn Frantz drew a lead off walk, then stole a base to get into scoring position before scoring to cut the lead to 3-1. After a scoreless 2nd inning Wellsboro picked back up in the 3rd as freshman Hannah Taylor, Frantz, and freshmen Teagan Novinger and Delaney Morral all scored to put Wellsboro in front, 5-3.

Wellsboro added 5 more runs in the 4th, highlighted by a home run by Frantz and a double by freshman Rylee Coolidge. Morral and Taylor scored their 2nd runs of the game in the inning, along with senior Arianah Lawton to put the Lady Hornets up 10-3.

Sullivan County added a run in the top of the 5th to cut the lead down to 10-4. Wellsboro was scoreless in the bottom half of the inning, but picked the offense back up in the 6th to close out the game.

Novinger led off the 6th with a base hit then sophomore Mazie Johnson doubled to score Novinger, making it 11-3. Freshman Kaylee Frazier and Lawton both reached base and scored along with Johnson to close out the game. Frantz (double) and Taylor also had hits before the game was called.

Johnson and Frantz led the Lady Hornets at the plate on the evening. Johnson was 3-for-3 with an RBI while Frantz finished 3-for-3 with a double, home run and 3 RBIs. Lawton finished 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Coolidge, senior Paige Logsdon (double), Novinger, Morral, Frazier and Taylor accounted for the Lady Hornets remaining 6 of their 14 total hits.

Frantz pitched a complete game to earn her first win of the season. She allowed 4 runs (1 earned) on 4 hits with 5 walks and 12 strikeouts.

The win improves the Lady Hornets to 2-5 (1-5 NTL Large School Division). The team is back in action next Thursday at Cowanesque Valley.
