A Milton corner kick and own goal by the Wellsboro Varsity Boys Soccer team midway through the first overtime period gave the Black Panthers a 2-1 non-league victory over the Hornets Saturday afternoon.
"This was the second consecutive year we've played into OT with Milton and the final score didn't go our way," head coach Todd Fitch said. "I'm disappointed in the result, but very proud of the boys' effort today. We're looking forward to getting everyone healthy and back on the field."
After a scoreless first half the Hornets put the game's first goal on the scoreboard in the opening minute of the second half. Senior Jonathan Carl converted a pass from junior Mason Brill past the Milton keeper, giving the Hornets a 1-0 lead. It didn't last long, however, as the Black Panthers scored three minutes later to tie the game at 1-all.
Neither team was able to find the back of the net until the Panthers' took advantage of a bobble near the goal line off a corner kick with 5:41 remaining.
Milton took 11 shots on goal to Wellsboro's six. Milton also had an 8-6 edge in corner kicks.
Senior Camden Tom made 5 saves in goal.
In the JV game the Hornets won 2-0 to improve to 4-0 on the season. Freshman Brayden Baldwin scored a header goal off a well placed cross and assist from freshman Maddon Mascho to put the Hornets up. Then with two minutes remaining, freshman Daniel Taboada scored to push the lead to 2-nil.
Wellsboro falls to 4-1 (2-1 NTL). The team is back in action Tuesday at Williamson.
