The Athens Wildcats scored 10 runs in the 4th inning to hand the Wellsboro Varsity Baseball team their fourth consecutive loss on Tuesday, March 25.
Before the Wildcats' big 4th inning the Hornets were trailing by one run.
"Tonight was another tough outcome but we are proud of the way the team fought back to make it competitive," said head coach Kyle Smith. "We are hopeful it is a game to learn from and keep working to improve."
Wellsboro jumped out to an early lead in their first at bat with a pair of runs coming on a two-run home run by junior Marek Mascho that scored senior Gabe Sprouse. The Wildcats but together a 4-run 2nd inning and then scored a solo run in the top of the 3rd to lead 5-2, but the Hornets pulled within a run in the bottom of the 3rd. With two outs and two runners on base, senior Alec Magli singled to left field to score Mascho and senior Ryder Bowen.
Then the flood gates opened on Wellsboro as Athens scored 10 runs in the top of the 4th to push their lead to 15-4. Wellsboro managed to get 4 runs back in the bottom half of the inning to cut the lead to 15-8.
Freshman Gabe Cuneo drew a walk to lead off the bottom of the 4th for Wellsboro, then scored on a passed ball. Next at bat, freshman Griffin Morral singled to score junior Cameron Owlett. Morral would later score on another passed ball following a double by Mascho. Mascho crossed home plate again as Bowen drove him home.
Both teams were scoreless in the 5th inning but scored later in the sixth before the game was called due to darkness. The Wildcats added a run to double up the Hornets at 16-8, but Wellsboro added two more in the bottom half of the inning, by Bowen and Magli.
Mascho led the Hornets at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs. Magli finished 1-for-3 and Morral and Sprouse were both 1-for-4. Sophomore Max Mascho started and earned the loss in 3 innings of work, surrendering 7 runs (6 earned) on 7 hits with 5 walks and 3 strikeouts. Marek Mascho pitched 1 and 2/3 innings, giving up 2 hits with 3 walks and a strikeout. Cuneo also threw a full inning, giving up 1 run on 1 hit with a walk and 2 strikeouts. Junior Dylan Copp threw 1/3 of an inning, allowing 4 runs on 2 hits with 2 walks. Senior Dustin Owlett also pitched, allowing 4 runs on 1 hit with 2 walks.
