Sophomores Coen Tennis and Max Mascho each hit home runs in the Wellsboro Varsity Baseball team's 7-5 loss to Cowanesaue Valley on Monday.
After the Indians took an early lead in the bottom of the 1st the Hornets rallied to take the lead in the top of the 2nd as Mascho hit a two-run shot to center field to score himself and freshman Gabe Cuneo, who singled to left one at bat earlier.
Cowanesque then put together a six-run 3rd inning to put them in front 7-2. After three scoreless innings the Hornets finally put together some more offense in the top of the 7th.
With two outs and two on, Tennis connected on a pitch and sent it to center field, scoring junior Marek Mascho and senior Gabe Sprouse. Sprouse singled with one out to get on base then Marek Mascho doubled to right before Tennis' home run. Now, trailing 7-5, senior Ryder Bowen reached base, putting the tying run for the Hornets aboard, however a line out ended the game, handing the win to CV.
The Hornets had six hits in the game, led by Cuneo and Max Mascho, who each went 1-for-2 and score runs. Sprouse, Marek Mascho, and Tennis were all 1-for-3 and Bowen finished 1-for-4. Tennis finished with 3 RBIs.
Sprouse threw the first 2 and 1/3 innings, allowing 6 runs (3 earned) on 2 hits with 2 walks for the loss. Max Mascho come on in relief for the final 3 and 2/3 innings, allowing 1 run on 2 hits with 2 walks and 5 strikeouts.
Gavin Churchill led the Indians at the plate, going 2-for-3. Lucas Hamilton finished 1-for-4 and drove in a pair of runs. Loagan Stickler earned the win on the mound, throwing 4 innings, allowing 2 runs on 2 hits with 4 walks and 7 strikeouts. David Hess also threw 3 innings, allowing 3 runs on 4 hits with 2 strikeouts.
"We got outplayed tonight in a lot of areas," head coach Kyle Smith said. "We didn't compete the way we expected to in the middle innings and that proved to be the difference. It was encouraging to battle back in the game and bring the tying run to the plate in the 7th, but we ran out of time."
The loss drops the Hornets to 3-6 overall and 3-4 in the NTL Large School Division. The team is back in action this afternoon against Troy.
